I embarrassed myself with two words

Standard

I love words, and the origins of words and phrases are an endless source of entertainment. I save the most interesting ones in long term memory, even – a place that barely keeps names or which light switch turns on what light.

I got in trouble over on FB yesterday by congratulating someone on their new job in a large retail establishment. I said that it had to be better than slinging hash, because the last job this person had was in a restaurant.

What else could I possibly have meant? Oops. Yes, hash does have other meanings, doesn’t it? I never thought! Would anyone even call drug dealing ‘slinging’? The phrase ‘slinging hash’ means only one thing to me; a colourful way of saying working, especially cooking, in a cheap restaurant, like a diner. I can’t remember if the restaurant was a cheap one, but I figured it’s a former job, so it couldn’t have been that much fun to work at and a little insult to it would be okay. I actually thought of all that before I used the phrase – and never once thought of anyone not knowing what it meant.

The offended party is early twenties, and maybe never heard ‘slinging hash’ before. It does seem like a 1940’s sort of phrase. Can you even get hash in a restaurant anymore? I don’t eat it, I wouldn’t know. Or perhaps the phrase has grown a whole new meaning in the six years I’ve been over here.

Maybe it’s because I was speaking to an American and I expect all Americans to know the strictly Yank turns of phrase. This is one of the ones I wouldn’t use here, because here ‘hash’ really only has one meaning, and it isn’t corned beef. I’m more likely to use American slang when I can, because I’m quite aware of when I can’t. I think in three versions of English: American, English, and Irish. Like knowing that I can never say ‘ride’ in Ireland, but it is fine in the UK and the US.

In any case, I’m sorry if I freaked anyone out, I was innocently trying to say congrats on a better job.

Bean has been Brushed!

Standard

This is Beanie, a very lucky dog! She belongs to the ever-fabulous Socks and her hubby Bear. Bean, like my dog Neko, is a thinker. An over-thinker. She makes up stuff to get worked up about, but she’s learned that when life gets rough, a pair of comfy pyjamas makes it all better.

You probably notice something different in this picture…a background! I was having a divil of a time separating the white fur from the black, and decided I’d have to have a background color. I’d intended to cut Bean out of the background, but I decided I like it the way it is. She looks like an illustration in a children’s book. Much less true to life than the other drawings I’ve done, but perhaps more fun to look at. She makes me smile : )

Aside

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Ohio.

But it sounds funny; the cadence is off and it almost sounds like an opera. I have no idea if I’m making this up, or if it exists in some cover version somewhere.

I realise I have a story about this song. Earlier this year, I took a free course on job hunting and CV skills. Not that I needed it, but it was something to do and being as who you know is important here, why not. Anyhoo, the instructor was a lovely Scottish lady in her mid-50’s. While going over the ‘education’ section of my CV, she asked about the university I had attended (for a year, until the money ran out). I attended Kent State. But, as I pointed out, “Not the famous campus of Kent State, it was a satellite branch in another county.”
I got a blank look.
“You know, Kent State? The Kent State shootings? Where the national guard shot protesting students to death in 1970?”
Blank look.
“The famous picture of the woman screaming over a body?” I probably even posed like the photo.
Blank look.
“The Kent State shootings are what that song is about, you know, the Neil Young one, ‘four dead in Ohio’.”
Well, she’d never heard the song, and didn’t know about one of the most shocking moments in recent American history.
I decided to take it as a culture thing. That it was understandable that a Scottish woman didn’t know about Kent because let’s face it, Scotland in the 70’s had troubles enough of its own. I liked her, and didn’t want to think she was ignorant. But I think I’m still surprised and a bit annoyed.

Rua has been Brushed!

This is Rua, my sister’s greyhound.

I’m not very happy with this drawing, it looks like those paint-by-numbers kits I did as a kid. Oh well! Every day I learn something new, and attempting brindle colouring was always going to be a challenge!

I’m a bit depressed, and confused…

Standard

I missed a call on the land line when I was outside doing laundry. It was from the same company I had the good interview with last week. It wasn’t the fellow who interviewed me, though – it was the head of the sales department.

Um. I’m not a sales person. I’ve never done sales. I couldn’t sell water to someone on fire.

I rang back, he was on another line, can he ring me back. Sure.

While I was waiting, I checked the classifieds in the three papers I read every week. Nothing for me: accountant, nurse, chef, childminder, and a dozen different kinds of engineer. Sigh.

Then I turned to something I’ve been putting off. My social welfare appeal form.

See, about three weeks ago they cut off my dole. Totally. It was only €53.80 a week, but still it would nearly fill our gas tank. Nearly. So now I’m getting nothing at all, and I had to appeal. Which is hard because they decided that hubby makes too much for me to qualify, and that isn’t true. Well, not exactly. It’s complicated, but basically comes down to this: he IS on the dole 1 out of 4 weeks. But instead of taking the pittance from the government, he’s been using up his holiday time. Otherwise, we’d be using the credit card to pay utilities. He’s now out of holidays and the next time they put him off work, he’ll have to go on the dole.

I’m not asking for my €53.80 now, but I don’t want my case to be closed when our situation changes all the time. Let’s hope the next change is due to me getting a damn job.

The sales manager called back and said the man who interviewed me passed on my CV to him. New guy reiterated the reason for the delay in hiring for the position I had interviewed for. He then asked if I wanted to interview with him.

Well, sure, I’ll come and talk to you about it. Next Monday? Okay.

But why? Why me, why now, what’s the story here? Did I impress the first guy so much that he wants to hire me into the company now and bring me into his department when the job is officially available? Did he not want to hire me for his department at all but thought I would do elsewhere? Did he just feel sorry for my can’t-even-get-welfare arse?

I donno. Will see on Monday. Maybe it’s an admin position in the sales department, I could do that…

A walk in the bog

Standard

More pictures from the good camera. It’s a Panasonic DMZ-TZ3 with a 10x optical zoom and a Leica lens, for any camera geeks out there. Socks got one and raved about it, we got one and loved it, and I think we’ve talked at least three others into getting this camera. Great little thing.

Back in August I was feeling pretty shitty all of the time with the stupid back. I woke up feeling good one day, and wanted to get out of the house. It was such a rarity to feel good, I didn’t want to waste it. I was also still pretty damn grumpy and didn’t want to be around people, or even my dog. My best option was to go for a walk along the disused railroad tracks that run behind and through my town.

I walked up to where the tracks crossed a road and entered there, instead of further out into the bog as I usually do when walking the dogeen. I was immediately glad I didn’t take her along, and even more glad that I wore high boots, as the blackberries were crazy-mad over the tracks at first. Breaking trail was painful for me in heavy cowboy boots and jeans. Her poor feet would have been very sore and her legs sliced into lace. I struggled on, looking for things to photograph.

I don’t even know what kind of plant this is. It’s like a huge Queen Anne’s Lace. This one wasnt open fully yet, and had a perfect cup that I could have fit my fist into.

20111108-181507.jpg
The blackberries weren’t close to being ripe, but their leaves were changing colour already.

20111108-181629.jpg
I loved the rocks, ivy, bushes and weeds that overgrew the tracks.

20111108-183148.jpg
Looking away from the town and out into the cow pastures and bog, I found this twisted pine. The tenacity of life in harsh situations appeals to me.

A beautiful tree wound in ancient ivy. But behind it…

20111108-183510.jpg
Seems I’ve attracted the attention of the locals.

20111108-183640.jpg
Closer and closer he came…

20111108-183753.jpg
…and brought his friends along. Soon I had an audience of curious bullocks.

He was the bravest of all, and got as close as he could. So much for taking more shots of the tree…

Frikkin’ laser beams, man!

Standard

A quickie. iDJ took this pic of Spot trying to destroy Neko with his laser-beam eyes. Zap!

I’ve got a few good videos, too, but don’t know how to share them yet. Of course, I’ve not really tried yet, either!

Camouflage and cooking

Standard

iDJ is off work this week. We’d rather he wasn’t, but as a reward for his company doing the best out of a large group of companies, everyone is forced to take one week a month off. This means unemployment also known as the dole, or in Cockney rhyming slang: the rock and roll. He’s been taking his week as holiday pay so he gets a full pay check. Sorry, cheque. Ugh, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to that spelling. It’s not like we are going anywhere on holidays, after all.

Last time he was off, he learned just how little gets done in a full day at home. Made me feel a bit better. This week, he’s trying to be more productive. It didn’t hurt that he found me already hard at it when he woke up yesterday. I think it put him into work-mode.

He cut the grass. It looks worse now than it did before. Hacked, wet, and uneven. Bare patches of mud that had been covered by the blowing blades are now uncovered by the mowing blades. Even the mower itself was embarrassed by the job it did, and tried to hide at the scene of the crime.

20111108-115939.jpg
Yuck. I cleaned it off and tried to console it: the grass was too wet, you did your best, not your fault. Then I repeated my platitudes to iDJ, but I think I felt more sorry for the mower.

Then, since it was nice out, he decided to grill. Out came the Weber for pre-cleaning.

Oh dear lord, what in the hell happened here? It’s been so damp this year that fuzzy grey mold was growing inside the grill. Not just on the grate, but on the unused charcoal. Barfola, as we said in the eighties. I’m very happy this is his toy and I didn’t have to help, other than fetching a bucket of hot water and a scrubber, and to bitch when he spilled filthy muck on the concrete instead of into the drain.

I think he got it going by five, and by then it was getting pretty dark. I hid inside next to the fire while he cooked. Sorry, dear, I’m not freezing my tookus off just to give moral support. It was cold enough that he put on fingerless gloves, and dark enough that he couldn’t see the smoke drifting up. He smoked his eyes. Repeatedly. Until they were blood-red.

Which meant funtime for me, as I had to administer the eyedrops. He gets freaky when you go near his eyes. It was easier to give the dog eyedrops when she needed them. She didn’t struggle or whine nearly as much.

Pics of the rescued kitten

Standard

We got a wee doohickey that means I can now connect the SD card from our ‘real camera’ to the iPad for direct upload. Previously, if I wanted a pic from that camera I had to upload to one of the laptops and email it to myself (not happening), or wait for iDJ to do it and steal the pics from his FB page. Now that I’m in control, I’ll probably be out of control and you’ll be seeing more photographic posts. Sorry if they are boring.

I’ve uploaded a ton of pics to the iPad now, and the first ones I’d like to share are of the kitten I found, rescued and delivered to the Mayo SPCA last month.

20111107-214201.jpg
These are the only two pictures I have of him. He was so filthy, but had cleaned himself by morning. He looked a lot better, but was still stained brown on his nose and paws. I wonder if he found a home.

Some days I love to sit and listen

Standard

I have sunshine again, after the hiatus it took yesterday. It’s a bit breezier today, so I doubt I’ll see any reverse-base-jumping spiders.

It’s a noisier day, too. The kids are back in school this week, and while we don’t live that close it, they are loud. They are apparently at recess, or whatever it’s called here. Lots of screams and shouts, and the occasional thwack of foot on ball. Or head on ball, if they play team sports like I did.

My washing machine is on, too. Doesn’t sound good when it spins, clunk whump rattle. I might have a look next spin cycle and hope it is just all the crap we piled on top rattling around, and not an imbalance. I hate trying to figure those out.

I also hear the ever-present rooks, ravens and crows chattering away to themselves and each other. Sometimes one will perch on top of our chimney and giggle to itself. Imagine a dirty old man telling jokes in a dark corner of a pub, and snickering at every line. Sounds quite creepy coming down the flue.

No cow calls today, nor donkeys, nor chickens. Too late in the morning for them, I suppose. Perhaps they are all too happy with the sunshine to complain.

We need to cut the grass. Its been wet for so long the task is a difficult one. The garden is small, and we have limited storage space, and we try to be green – so our mower is one of those old fashioned rotary push mowers. Fuel is expensive, too, but both of us have plenty of calories to burn! It works great when it is dry, not so much when your lawn is a thin layer of grass floating on very slippery mud. We need to borrow someone’s petrol (gas) mower desperately. It would be nice to have the last cut of the year be an even one. Currently it looks like hell, and the dog doesn’t like to poop in tall grass. I hate sweeping the floor to clear the little loose bits that follow us inside, too – Spot eats them, then of course barfs them up again. I rake, but my back doesn’t like it, and our compost bin is full.

I also need to ask Himself if he’ll help me winterize my potted plants. I don’t want to leave them sitting in trays full of water when the frost starts. It’s difficult to pick a day to do this, however. A sunny day is a good one for working, but also makes winter seem so far away. It’s such a mess out here, though. You’d never believe I pressure washed the lot back in April. In any case, the blueberry bushes are in big pots and I shouldn’t be trying to lift them. Then I’ll have to wash and store the trays somewhere. That’s the part I’m really not looking forward to, our tiny shed is unbearably cramped since the Weber grill iDJ lusted after was found on sale and moved in.

The kids have gone to lunch. I hear a high flying jet, and a truck beepily backing up somewhere in the distance. And my washer, which sounds much better now. Maybe it was just a hairball.
