Bengal Bullshit

Standard

I love Lumi, I really do. But since I’ve been off work for three months, I have become his biggest toy.

I keep hair ties in my pocket to give to him whenever he is awake, and I need to sit down. He has three things he does with them: lose it under the TV stand, lose it under the couch, or take it into the kitchen.

If he goes in the kitchen, the hair tie first goes in the big water bowl. No problem if it is full

…but if partially empty, this happens.

After that, I find the sopping wet hair tie in the dry food bowl, abandoned and smelly.

Tonight I had the trifecta, however. Spilled water. Then a massive puke (in a shoe, did he read how to be a stereotypical cat somewhere?), then one of his patented Giant Smelly Shits.

Now that he has purged from both ends, he is running around the house top to bottom enjoying his svelte new self. As he does.

Lumi Cutie

Standard

It’s been pretty rough here lately, hence me not being around much. I need to post something fun to cheer me up, and what better than my kitten/no longer kitten Lumi?

Christmas Cat!

He climbed in here behind my back, it’s a sack for firewood.

He has a skull on his shoulders!

Still loves his ‘brother’ Lokii.

And loves his ‘daddy’, too.

Birthday Kitten!

Standard

Little (not so little) Lumi is one today!

He won’t be considered fully grown for another six months. Which is crazy as he already is about a stone or 14lbs or 6.35kilos. He is a big boy!

My face is a bathtub, apparently. Ah, who cares? He is a lovely cat and I’m so glad we have him!

Especially when he sings me the song of his people!

Whaaat?

The dog is shedding again. She’s an American Akita, so blows her coat twice a year – but man, to me it feels like she never stops! I brushed the hell out of her yesterday and only got about half of it out (if even).

Lumi, however, thought this was the best thing ever. To be honest, anything new to him is The Best Thing Ever. I’ve never had a more inquisitive cat in my life. He was right there underfoot, all six feet that were involved, and adding his four to the mix. Neko was not pleased as she always thinks I’m scary, and a cat sniffing around her feet didn’t help! She put up with it, anyway, and after I fought the static-cling and released her from the torture, I was left with half my kitchen covered in dog hair.

And Lumi, still fascinated by the carnage.

Of course there is Lokii too, having a quick sniff and running off. But look at Lumi’s face! This needs a good caption.

Any takers?

We Need Some Lumi!

Standard

This writing about what I’ve read is starting to annoy me already, as I will have several books under my belt before I can be arsed to post. I finished another one today…

I need to tell you about Lumi instead!

He is MASSIVE. Not quite 10 months old, he weighs nearly a stone (14lbs to a stone, so over 6 kilos). He won’t be fully grown until he is a year and a half old. Whoa! I seem to have a little white tiger in my house.

Neko and Lumi being buddies in the sunshine this week. Neko still has her St Patrick’s bandanna on – she loves it. Neko is about 36 kilos (just under 80lbs) so it does help to give an idea of Lumi’s size.

Such a long tail, too.

Mid-air action shots! He loves leaping to catch a toy (feathers onna stick are the best). It was sooo hard to get these. The rest of the play session was a white blur.

I’m an Eejit – but LOOK at my Furry Ones Being Clever

Standard

This is Lumi and Neko having their very first play session!

Neko is trying to play with him like she did with Spot – but Lumi has no idea what is going on or what she expects of him.
I am very proud of them both. Neko is so gentle and always has her lips curled tight to her teeth to make sure she doesn’t do any harm. I do worry about those big feet of hers but she never stepped on him once. And Lumi? Just laid there purring while being poked by a giant dog and being drooled upon. Good wee man, just 8 months old now.

Apologies for my pyjamas being in shot. A Christmas gift and I needed to do laundry… But, I was standing there, refereeing, just in case.

Why am I an eejit? Because I still can’t remember how to embed a video in a post. So stupid me has to do a linky-dink to share this. Doh!

So – Lumi Wasn’t Well…

Standard

He was very lethargic when we came home from work on the 12th. He had also possibly vomited blood, and had the squitters. I felt his belly and it seemed…lumpy. Not the smooth fat kitten tummy I was used to.

It was a Thursday and well after walk-in hours, but when I rang the vet looking for an emergency after hours number, one of the vets answered (yes, one was still there and answering the phone after 7pm) and when I explained what was going on he said to bring Lumi in. Thank you!

Lumi had just had his nuts off the weekend before, so our worry was that he had accidentally picked up a bug when at the vets, or maybe he ate a plant that disagreed with him (my indoor plants should all be safe for cats, but…), or he ate the rubber band that went missing, or one of the many, many hair ties that iDJ loses, or ate something from the Christmas tree … he is still just seven months old, so who the hell knows what he has been chewing on!

The vet didn’t seem too concerned about the lumpy belly. Which was good. He didn’t want to give antibiotics yet, either – also good in my mind. Lumi did get a shot to settle his tummy and some pills to do the same.

And it worked, for a few days. By Monday evening, he was back to not being part of the household by sleeping upstairs on the bed, not coming to say hello to me or himself, and there was a big, wet, smelly, bloody poop in the litterbox. Dammit.

Tuesday morning I took him to the vet again. The other doc this time, and three young observers. He looked at Lumi’s history, checked and felt him all over, and listened to my concerns. He said that cats don’t normally get intestinal blockages – but when they do? It’s right around Christmas when all the tempting tinsel, etc, is there to nom upon.

He wanted to do a barium run and X-ray my wee man as it progressed through his system, in case there was a blockage or another issue. I was hesitant, having flashbacks of leaving Spot in and never getting him back again. But I agreed in the end.

24 to 36 hours was the estimate for how long this would take! I was sad, hubby was sad. Worst of all, Lokii broke our hearts by walking around looking in all of Lumi’s favourite napping places to no avail. He loves his brother so much.

Next morning at 9am, the office told me that the barium had raced through to his intestines in only 4 hours. Way too fast! But as of yet, no sign of a blockage. I’d have to wait and see, as once it his his guts it slowed right down. At 11:30, they still didn’t want to release him – more X-rays. By 4, they said I could come get him. Of course I left work (I work until 6:30) to go get my wee boy.

He came home with a ‘cocktail’ of medicine. The dreaded Pink Stuff. I can pill a cat with ease, but this gag-worthy pink liquid is nearly impossible to get into a Bengal after they have tasted it once. Twice a day this time! Suffice to say that by now, the meds are gone but I’m still finding pink drool spattered everywhere: I have to wash the couch cover, and probably the curtains.

The cocktail consisted of Betamox (amoxicillin) and Flagyl (metronidazole); both are antibiotics. Also Imodium (loperamide), which is for helping stop diarrhoea and slows down the digestive process. No actual diagnosis, unfortunately. He is also on a dry gastrointestinal specialty food. He was disappointed in it at first, but is back to gobbling it down like a mad thing. We got him gastrointestinal wet pouches last Saturday, and he loves those – as does Lokii!

So far he has been fine, back to his mad tricks. Last night and the night before he projectile vomited food that was very much on its way to being digested (brown liquid basically, not the normal cat puke which is easily identifiable as kibble or treats, etc). Tonight we are on lock down to make sure he gets nothing at all other than the special food. Hope it works.

He is definitely interested in the flower arrangement I got today!

New Cat Tree

Standard

With Lumi at the vet from 9-4 today, it was prime time to assemble the tree without having to explain every step to him.

Yes, I do that. He wants to know, and listens intently.

I also wouldn’t have to fight him for the box, or fish screws out from under the fridge.

I dug all the parts out of the box, looking for the instructions. Oh dear, only one sheet.

Oh dear…

That’s the instructions? This might take a while.

Hubby went out with the dog for a walk, and I set to work. It took about an hour, and I only had to re-do one part that I’d assembled backwards.

Ta-da! The old and the new. This is where it will live, right in the kitchen! It is taller than I am (I’d guess 5ft 10in or about 178cm) and very sturdy. I’ve disassembled the old one, and will see if our local SPCA wants it.

I did make one change. There are supposed to be two ‘ladders’ but I only put on one.

With – it blocks most of the largest platform. I figure the boys will use that as a step to get higher and not run up it.

So I left it off. Better, I think.

Lokii likes it!

Lumi loves it! He is only just back from his surgery so is a bit doped up still, and rather sleepy and clumsy. But he went right to the highest level and looked so proud of himself.

I’d recommend this tree, at least for now. Will see how it holds up to how Lumi launches himself onto and off of it.
