Black and White Three – Beautiful Messes

Standard

Urlaur Lake, Mayo – one of my other favourite places and so close.

More boats from around Killala harbour.

I took the same shot in colour – it is good too, but I still like the B&W better.

Which do you like better?

Tigridia Tuesday – Week 3. With a Contest!

Standard

Sorry I’ve not been on here much at all the last week – ’twas my birthday in there, and I had the week off so I was doing stuffs. Didn’t do the Cartoon Challenge, didn’t post any of the other fabulous flowers I have to share with you, or the one fun place I went over the weekend. Soonish, I’m sure.

But I committed to doing a once a week all-tigridia post, so I must do so!

Thursday: it was windy! But my size-large hand is in one of these, so you get an idea of how big these blooms are. Sorry they are a bit battered by the wind.

That’s okay – I took it again using Hipstamatic. Looks pretty good in B&W!

Getting there – Monday there were NONE. I guess they needed a break.

Tuesday, yesterday as I’m all messed up and didn’t know what day it is until just now: there were six, but I knew I’d be tired of posting pics by now (and I am) so I did four in one shot – is that cheating?

IMG_3178.JPG

I have a wee quiz this week! One of the days in this week’s line up wasn’t taken with my iPhone 4, it was taken with our fancy-pants camera – a Nikon D3100 – instead. If you get the correct answer, I will post (mail) a packet of mixed tigridia seeds to you from 2013 (if you want them, of course). I know they are viable as I have oodles of seedlings, some now a good foot tall. They may not bloom until next year or the year after, but isn’t that half the fun of gardening from seed? Of course I will help with any germination questions. Good luck!

Contest closes next Tuesday, August 12.

Hope you enjoyed the photos – it’s a good feeling for me to save them here since they only last a few hours.

About Time I Share Flower Pics, Yes?

Standard

Its been an off year for me, with the planting. I started off really early on my veggies, in hopes that they actually do something this year. Mostly I ended up with a lot of dead seedlings for my efforts.

Then, I was late with starting flowers from seed. Ugh! Most of my new babies are just tiny things, or didn’t bother themselves to grow at all. Luckily, I have a good few that over wintered just fine and have been shouting to the sun their joy at being alive.

My Sweet William from seed, now in year three and showing no signs of stopping.

20140625-212407-77047246.jpg
I might have to stop it myself by deadheading – damn stuff self-seeded all over the place and is smothering one of my blueberry bushes (in a pot).

Not from seed: clematis! Year two for this plant, and sadly it’s hard to see the blooms as it is growing up the grey willow tree and gets buried in the leaves. I took the fist pic with my iPhone – second one was iDJ’s work but I have no idea what he used. His is more true to life colour, but I like mine better because I couldn’t even see the bloom, it was over my head and horizontal so I clicked and hoped for a result. Woot!

20140625-212943-77383568.jpg
Also not from seed, unless it seeded itself – native Irish yellow iris. Most people here would not have this in their garden, it’s rather invasive and weed-like. Don’t care: love it.

20140625-213210-77530050.jpg
Yet another not from seed! I hopped a wall and stole this from the terribly unloved landscaping at the business next door to mine. Seriously, it’s all weeds and horsetails over there. Except for these zinnia! They are very large, 4in or 10cm across. I’d hoped these were Gerbera daisies when I stole them. But I’m not displeased. I’m sure they will love it here!

20140625-213507-77707183.jpg
Roses roses roses… Nothing out of my favourite lavender rose yet: something snapped off the early spring growth and it is only just considering blooming now. But the massive white roses are taking over, the candy-floss pink ones are exuberant, and the darker pink ones are just deciding this is a good year.

Galliardia from seed last year, survived our mild winter but is slow to start. The rudbeckia is all leaf still – but one of those plants is now three years old, too!

But today! Today, we walked out front to see the first bloom on my “black” lilies! I love these so much!

20140625-220053-79253602.jpg
Best thing is that I accidentally learned an iPhone photography trick for flowers. I took a shot of this, and it was so very wrong in the colour. Too red, too orange. So I put the flash on, as a whim – and by golly by jazuz, the real colour came out and said hello! I will be using this again in the future – imagine how that clematis pic would have looked!

Thanks for wandering around my small Irish garden with me!

Toothy Smiles from Spottie-Cat

Standard

I need cheering up. I can’t think of a better way to do that than to post the photos I took Saturday. Because, awwwww.

20140304-195649.jpg
It’s working already. I love this cat.

20140304-195804.jpg
Spot was passed out, I mean totally out, on my leg. My leg being connected to my other leg, connected to my arse, which was planted in front of the fire. Ahh.

20140304-200109.jpg
I can’t resist smiling back when I see him grin so big in his sleep that a fang pokes out!
Sorry if the one above was massive – I think I hit the wrong setting just there. But as always, I’m impressed with the detail an iPhone can pick up. I can see the root of each individual hair, and it looks like his teeth are in good shape for his age, too…

20140304-200522.jpg
Of course eventually my moving around and giggling bothered Spot a bit, and he shifted and curled his arm over his nose.

More awwwww.

Hope I cheered up anyone else in a funk, too!

Bad Dog-Mom = Great Cat-Mom

Standard

It’s been cold lately, and even though she has a thick fur coat, the dog refuses to understand that she is only allowed on the couch when she is invited. She’s been in a slow shed since about August, so is definitely not welcome on my awesome couch.

After I caught her sneaking up there while I was still home, I started leaving things in the way so she would take the damn hint. Sometimes it would be a random ladder that was to hand (what, you don’t have ladders just leaning around in your living room?), but lately it has been a couple of empty boxes.

Of course, the cats were in ecstasy that I had boxes just leaning around in my living room. But it got better when I put them on the couch. Double the fun!

This morning I had another brilliant idea. I tucked a corner of the blanket that lives on the couch into the box before I left for work. Nine hours later, I come home and iDJ immediately asks me, “Guess where Spotty is?”

20140214-212325.jpg
I have turned Spot into the happiest cat in Ireland.

Laser-eyes courtesy of the iPhone flash: needed as it is lovely and dark and warm and soft in the box now.

Foggy Saturday, with Graves

Standard

I have so much crap to post, and have had so little motivation to do so! It’s sad because I know you will love that one pic of the cats being cute, but since when am I happy putting a post up with just one pic? Neverrrrr. So instead I goof off on FB or read everyone else’s blogs (and I’m massively behind on that, too).

I have to get these up here, as there are some pretty amazing pics if I say so meself.

Backstory; iDJ and I had just eaten one of his amazing weekend breakfasts and were finishing off the rest of the episode of Justified, or Marvel Agents of SHEILD, or maybe one of the old Voyager episodes… if you think I’m bad at reading blogs, imagine how much backlog of awesome TV I still have to watch. I don’t even have Grim yet.

Anyhoo. I glanced out the window at our mountain, and I see something awesome.

20140206-212700.jpg
The fog bank had rolled over the top of our rather short mountain and had thinned out once over the top. I’d never seen this weird weather before in the nearly nine years we’ve lived in this house.

20140206-212926.jpg
Hubby paused the TV (what, you think I get to touch the remote?), leapt up, and said we had to go get photos right now now now before it was too late!!!

20140206-213129.jpg
So in pyjamas and steel-toe work boots, I gathered up my iPhone and his expensive camera and he drove like a madman to the parish cemetery – always the best spot for a view of the mountain.

20140206-213403.jpg
I acted as a bad roadie for his expensive cam (the lenses had fingerprints on them! And no soft lens wipe in his massive case! Panic panic panic). But while he was being all professional I whipped out my iPhone and turned on my favourite B&W Hipstamatic setting, and took the three B&W pics above. Then the damn phone decided to choke and died, and once I had convinced it that yes, it did have battery life left, I got the colour one with the regular iPhone 4 cam.

20140206-214849.jpg
This is the only photo iDJ took that he deemed worthy. Yeah, it’s awesome. But I’m so fond of mine that I actually signed up and submitted one to the National Geographic ‘your shot.’ Guess which one?

Cleaned up Cuteness

Standard

Another new thing I have now – iPhoto! So far I’ve not played around with it much. What I am loving is the “repair” function. What this means is now I can (mostly) hide the ginormous holes in the dog bed. The party responsible for making the holes is not pictured (yes, Lokii, I’m talking about you).

The editing isn’t perfect, but it makes me happier not to see all the green fluff spilling out.

I wish I could fix the actual dog bed so easily!

20140129-095707.jpg
Yes, I took these photos months ago, sorry Tom!

20140129-095735.jpg
They don’t do this often, but it’s nice to catch them cuddling.

Pretty Awesome.

Standard

I got a new iPad for Christmas – the iPad Air. It does some new stuff. One of the things it does is let you go backward in time in your photo stream, until you can see all of your photos by the year they were taken. Itty bitty photos.

I just loved seeing this! I’m so glad that my life has been awash in colours like these. Funny how seeing everything you found interesting for an entire year looks both small and huge at the same time.

20140128-205314.jpg

So many photos you know! And so many you don’t. I’m pleased that I’ve clearly been taking more and more every year.

And yes, now my photo stream includes a photo of my photo stream…

All the Fur-babies, Caught in Pixels

Standard

I have a new phone! Well, not ‘new,’ exactly. iDJ has a new iPhone, the 5s. I, as per usual, inherit the old phone, in this case the iPhone 4s. He got the new one as an upgrade, so no extra expense – except for having to get a new SIM card for my phone.

Why should you care? Because now I will have a Much Better camera – with a flash – with me at all times. Oh, you mean it makes phone calls too? Oh, okay…

My first flash-photog experiments took place last night. Lokii was on my lap enjoying the fire with me, and I’ve never been able to get a me-eye-view before because it is just too dark.

20131207-191820.jpg
Whoops, blurry. Let me try again… I want those cute curled toes!

20131207-191923.jpg
Uuurghhh! Why is it focussing on his nose? I know it’s a huge nose and all, but please let’s not give him a complex.

20131207-192043.jpg
Oh well. I guess I will figure it out eventually. It is still an amazing photo of a perfectly-black Siamese nose. Now you see why it is so hard to get a pic of his face. And his nails – well, I trimmed them by feel last weekend, that’s why some are long and some are not.

20131207-192503.jpg
Hubby took this one. My place on the couch is further over, so all I could see was the tips of her toes as she held on to the table. I asked him to take a shot so I could see everything (I couldn’t get up as I am the cat-repository). Yes, I need to trim her nails, too. Please feel free to peruse my media collection, or ask about the most amazing guitar ever.

20131207-193004.jpg
We hunted down, trapped and bagged our tree today. It is really clean, compared to the ones we got the last two years. But. The cats think it smells funny in one place. I took this one…

20131207-193204.jpg
And this one.

20131207-194012.jpg
And now we get to see the 5s in action. Dammit.

20131207-194229.jpg

20131207-194303.jpg
Lokii looks so weird in this one! Ears back, stocky body hunched up. He’s on his hind legs here, but clearly he isn’t as good at the meerkat pose as Spottie is.

20131207-194534.jpg
Here is a good pic of the bald patch Spot has developed. I think it is a reaction to the new wet food, because he’s had acne and other strange reactions to new things in the past (he was allergic to Lokii for ages, how bizarre is that). The fur is coming back in quite fast, so I don’t think he needs a vet visit again.

Still blooming!

Standard

I still have flowers! Lots of them! I think it is quite appropriate that my late-autumn blooms are lovely autumn colours, too.

Would you like to play a game? Two of these shots were taken on iDJ’s iPhone 4s (by himself) the rest on my iPhone 3s (by me). Which two?

Rudbeckia (black-eyed-Susan), anyone?

What is possibly going to be my last sunflower of the year. We will see, the first plant had buds all the way down the stem.

20131008-220009.jpg
There’s the goddamn carrot pic I was looking for! Yummy 🙂

20131008-220352.jpg
And that first tasty ‘mater!

Just to be contrary, my last photo isn’t shades of orange and red, but of a pink Tigrida – yes, these are still blooming, too! Not as prolific these days, but I’m well impressed with these guys.
