Ha ha. I actually picked up saffron in lidl yesterday for €1.99 as part of Easter deluxe specials. Score! No clue what I’m gonna use it for but a bargain’s a bargain!

Okay weird, I dreamt last night that I was talking about the one organic dish I can make – gormeh sabzee! Might have been the fancy rice that made me think of it. Let’s see, butter or olive oil, salt, garlic granules, fenugreek, turmeric, and whole green cardamom pods. Oh, and paprika or coarse ground black pepper. I put it all in with the water and leave it go (I learned how to make rice from an Iranian man, it never goes wrong).

Oh, it wasn’t my creative imagination! Behind the registers at some grocers in Chinatown are various jars of… things. We like to generically call them all ‘powdered tiger penises’ because we can’t read the labels, but we can read the numbers!
My god, I read saffron is a spice. Now I understand why Columbus had his voyage financed by the king! Well, he was supposed to bring back spices. He brought back corn. Not bad 🙂
It is the stamens of a variety of crocus, so very few per plant. Don’t forget the potatoes!
