Co-creator Doug Naylor has signed on to write an eleventh season, one which is already scheduled to shoot later this year.

For the uninitiated, Red Dwarf is the story of Dave Lister (Craig Charles). Through a series of unfortunate events he is the last living human in the known universe, and is stranded on a mining ship lost three million years in deep space. His only companions are the hologramatic recreation of his former bunkmate, a twit named Arnold Judas Rimmer (Chris Barrie); Kryten (Robert Llewellyn), a neurotic maintenance droid with a head that looks like a pencil eraser; and Cat (Danny John-Jules), a vain, ditzy humanoid that evolved from Lister’s cat Frankenstein. There’s also a time-addled computer, who has gender reassignment surgery part of the way through the series. The crew has all sorts of crazy adventures, meet all manner of space creatures, robots, and half-mad killer cyborgs, and even travel through time on occasion.”

Great show! Lister is a thick cutie, and how can you not like the descendent of a cat in space?
I always liked the cat idea. But I still collate Red Dwarf with my Brit Ex who would rather talk about sci-fi shows (which he knew I liked, fine as far as it went) than discuss what the fuck I was supposed to do once he had asked me to marry him across five time zones. Gack!!!
I eventually got to like Babylon-5 so perhaps Red Dwarf has comeback potential. I still chuckle about the Vindaloo Monster.
Ah, bless his little cotton socks. I think I would have given up on that too – all romance, no practicality.
I would watch Red Dwarf over and over, like old episodes of Star Trek, but funnier. If they were syndicated – and they are not, dammit! It might have been the first clue for my sister and I that we weren’t meant to be ‘Americans’ when we loved Monty Python, The Young Ones, and various 80’s European pop bands so very much more than any US counterpart.
