Hello, all you wonderful blogging people out there! I need some assistance, please.
In the last few weeks, I’ve found and followed several lovely, funny new blogs. However, despite my clicking ‘follow,’ I am never notified when they put up a new post. Now, some have had a special link off to the side that says, ‘notify me of new posts via email’. Those blogs I get email notifications for. The ones that don’t have that special widget, or whatever it is called, are the ones I never hear from until I go and visit specifically.
And let’s face it, I don’t do that very often.
So does anyone have tips or advice on how I can not miss new posts? Perhaps this is an iPad thing – even though I always choose ‘view standard site’?
I use Google Reader and add subscriptions as I find them. I found out that “following” doesn’t automatically get you new posts, I have to add them to my blogger profile/blogroll, and THEN they automatically show up. I’m sure WP has something similiar…
Hahah, I still haven’t figured out how to do a blog roll either. Some things I can only do on a ‘real’ computer. I don’t use Reader because it doesn’t give the stats back to the blogger – I checked it with my hubby who uses it and nope, not one more ‘hit’ when he read a new post. I know how much I love those stats, I’d hate to deny anyone else their fair share!
It isn’t you. I’ve heard of this elsewhere on WP. go to your dashboard, My Blogs, then check all the settings. apparently, WP spontaneously changes the settings!
Hmm. At least on the iPad, they all say notify immediately. Is that what you see?
usually, but once I did have spontaneous changes!
Bugrit. I was really hoping I was doing something eegnorant…
You’re better off with the e-mail notification. “Follow” simply means that you can drill down from your dashboard to a page of blog updates… which is a pain, and easy to forget how to do.
If the whole thing makes you nuts, a utility like Google Reader is quite handy too. One web page, signed in through Google, with all the blogs you follow from any platform listed in the sidebar and ready to pop up in the main screen with a click, either one post or all recent posts.
So, is something that is just plain missing on these blogs? Because I can’t find a way to get updates via email for the life of me. I don’t really want to use reader, for the reasons above and I’ll be super irritated if I get all the other updates emailed to me AND in reader. I can’t delete an email without opening it first, on the iPad. Will take me ages to get thru 100+ duplicate emails a day.
Spiders, once you’re signed in to your blog, there should be a WordPress logo on the black bar at the top, next to your blog name, follow, like, reblog etc. If you click on the W, you will see a drop down that says, read blogs, freshly pressed, etc. If you click on read blogs, it will take you to a page with all the blogs you follow and you will see their new posts. Give it a try.
Or you can be like me and beg people like JustL to add the email subscription box to their pages! (It worked!)
Ah-ha! That does help! I even found blogs I had forgotten about. Thank you!
I know that if you go to the homepage, where freshly pressed it. You click on ‘read blogs’ and you can find all the new posts of all the blogs you follow. 🙂
Thanks, I think I’m good now! I’d love to beg like Lagitana did, but I don’t know some of these people well enough yet 🙂
that’s how you get to know people! show ’em your true self! i begged JustI and SHE was as nice as pie! (somebody begged me way long time ago, so I didn’t actually invent the begging solution!)
Hi Spiders!
If you go to the WordPress ‘Read Blogs’ page, there is a little “Edit List” link next to “Blogs I Follow”.
When you click on that, for every blog you follow there is a combo box allowing you to be email notified for every post instantly or once a day or once a week. Or to turn it off if you like.
Ah ha!!!! That was it! You’re da bomb 🙂
Holy crap, EIGHTEEN blogs I wasn’t getting emails from! I apologise to all 18 for not commenting, ever. I thought you were all just not very talkative…
